What if? analysis

Military planners use “What if?” analysis when looking ahead into an unknown future. This tool asks you to imagines a series of failed outcomes. You then track backwards to find plausible causes of these failures. Then you generate a list of warning signs that might indicate when a project is getting into trouble. Keep that list handy – and keep looking out for those warning signs.
